Durban hosts Older Person’s Parliament

The Older Person's Parliament is an opportunity for government to listen and engage older people on their challenges.

AROUND 2 000 elderly people from across the county are in Durban to participate in the Older Person’s Parliament.

The parliament, being held at the Durban Exhibition Centre, is part of the five-day Active Ageing Programme organised by the National Department of Social Development in partnership with the Provincial Government and eThekwini Municipality.

The Active Ageing Programme will run until 27 October at various venues in the city.

Welcoming the seating, MEC for Social Development, Weziwe Thusi, said the Older Person’s Parliament is an opportunity for government to listen and engage older people on their challenges. “The Province of KwaZulu Natal was honoured to host the Active Ageing Programme. The programme is aimed at identifying the challenges faced by older people in the country, on a daily basis. During this week awareness is also created around the programmes for older persons,” said Thusi.

The MEC said all issues raised by senior citizens during the session will be referred to relevant departments so that they can be resolved.
