Wayside Cross memorial

The Wayside Cross Yearly Remembrance Ceremony will be at Pinetown Library Park on Sunday, 5 November.

AN invitation is extended to residents of eThekwini to attend the Wayside Cross annual Remembrance Ceremony at Pinetown Library Park on Sunday, 5 November at 2pm.

The Wayside Cross was erected in 1928 by members of the community in remembrance. It is a unique ceremony world-wide held at the pleasure of eThekwini Municipality. This calendar highlight pays tribute to members of all uniformed and essential services of Pinetown and surrounding boroughs of eThekwini, who have given their lives in protection and service over the last 89 years for the community and country.

Emphasising that the ceremony does not compete with any military remembrance parade, this event is to encourage uniformed services to embrace and evolve their traditions.

“Tradition is a living thing and must evolve and serve the needs of organisations. The ceremony embraces individual service traditions and preserves the dignity and discipline commensurate with a ceremony of this significance,” said MOTH, Michael Lee.

This year in recognition of their ongoing dedication and charitable sacrifice to help all those in need through mutual help, true comradeship and sound memory over the past 90 years, the MOTHs of the Better ‘Ole Shellhole will stand proudly to attention as Guard of Honour and sentries for the duration of this year’s Wayside Cross Remembrance Ceremony.

Participation is anticipated from the mayoral office of eThekwini and councillors, arms of service of the SANDF, as well as the SANDF local contingent, The South African Police Service, Road Traffic Inspectorate, The Fire Department, Provincial Ambulance Service (EMRS), St John’s Ambulance Service, and Veterans Associations such as the MOTH, MOTHWA, MMMA and SA Legion. A fine turnout of local school representatives as well as cubs and scouts, and charity organisations is also expected.

“The positive response and encouragement we have received in past years confirms that there is an overdue need for an event of this nature. This year it will be special and an event not to miss. We invite all services and the public to support and attend this dignified ceremony for at the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them,” said Lee.
