Crime Stats: Durban police stations feature in top 30 nationally

Carjacking and Theft out of and from motor vehicles show an increase in crime stats released today, placing local police stations in the top 30 nationally.

THE 2016/2017 SAPS crime stats have been released and paint a bleak picture of crime trends across South Africa. Locally, Durban Central Police station, Umbilo Police Station, Berea Police Station and Sydenham Police Station feature in the top 30 police stations across the country in a number of categories.

Carjacking appears to be the growing crime trend in Durban. Berea Police Station finds itself in 26th place countrywide in the Carjacking category with a massive increase of 214.6 per cent, Umbilo Police Station is in 17th place with an increase of 34.2 per cent and Sydenham Police Station in 29th place with an increase of 22.3 per cent compared to last year’s stats.

Durban Central is placed 2nd in the country in the category Other Serious Crimes, although shows a decrease of 5.1 per cent compared to last year.

In the Shoplifting category, Durban Central is in second place in the country, but shows a downward trend of 8.2 per cent.

Non-residential robbery, the station is sixth in the country but shows a decrease in incidents compared to last year. Umbilo Police Station finds itself in 27th place in the country with an increase of 26 per cent in incidents.

In the category of Common Robbery, Durban Central is in 6th place while Umbilo Police Station is listed in 29th place.

Theft of motor vehicle and motor cycle incidents went down by 12.6 per cent in Umbilo, placing Umbilo Police Station in 29th place.

Theft out of or from motor vehicles however showed a big increase putting Durban Central Police Station in 7th place with an increase of 18.6 per cent compared to last year’s stats, and Umbilo Police Station in 28th place with an increase of 21.6 per cent.

Property Related Crime has Durban Central in 8th place countrywide, with an increase of 8.4 per cent and Umbilo in 25th place with an increase of 11.7 per cent.

In the All Theft category, Durban Central is in fourth place countrywide.

Commercial Crime incidents put Durban Central in fourth place, but show a decrease of 6.2 per cent compared to last year.
