Management hosted an event, which was attended by former Tafta CEO, Margie Smith, as well as residents and other guests, to celebrate the lives of Sgt John Gordon Lucas, who was killed in battle in Flanders on 20 September 1917 at the age of 20, and his brother Lt David Elmar Lucas, who died on 21 September 1917, aged 24.

Residents pose on the steps outside the original part of the building.

Mrs Margaret Lucas started a home for the elderly in their honour. According to Margie Smith, a group of volunteers was running the home after she died, but it was no longer sustainable. The home was offered to Tafta.

“It’s been a lovely complex. Architect, Mike Mullins, took on the project for us, his first retirement complex, and was very innovative in making the building work around the original house,” she said.

Manager, Susan van Rooyen, said the event was also held to celebrate birthdays for residents, Molly Haywood, who had recently turned 90, as well as Sheila Edmunds, Gloria Hatch, Jean Skinner, Ron Page and Brenda Burness.
