New fencing for derelict tennis grounds prepares ground for Metro Police Station

The fence will help keep vagrants out of the grounds and will keep the area clean.

PLANS to convert the abandoned Greyville Tennis Courts into a Metro Police Station took a step closer to reality this week when work on the new fencing around the property commenced.

According to ward councillor Martin Meyer, the new fencing will assist in keeping vagrants who have moved onto the property, out of the grounds and help in keeping the area clean from litter.

“I thank Garth Kloppenborg from the Parks Department for organising the fence. I am very pleased this project is now going ahead. There has been an issue of vagrancy on the premises for a while and litter has been an ongoing problem, but the new fencing will help curb this,” he said.

Meyer said gates would be erected to allow people access to the grounds when unlocked. “Work on a vehicular entrance will start shortly and a parking lot will be created on the lower tennis court in preparation for the Metro Police station,” he said.

Meyer said there had been a hiccup in the ongoing negotiations on finalising the police station plans, however this would continue.

“The fencing will be a short project of around two to three weeks, depending on the weather. We are grateful that unemployed youth in the area have been given the opportunity to undertake this work,” he said.
