Hoy Park ablution block to be demolished

The toilets remain locked and there are no change rooms for sporting people who use the facility.

THE ablution facilities at Hoy Park Sports Grounds in Durban need to be demolished, due to a sewage leak which has rendered them unusable.

Councillor Nicole Graham said she had received complaints from the public and sports clubs who use the facility that the toilets are always closed, and there is a nasty sewage leak which is unpleasant.

“I have been told the toilets remain locked and there are no change rooms for sporting people who use the facility. Temporary toilets have had to be brought in for big events at Hoy Park,” she said.

Graham said she contacted eThekwini Municipality regarding the issue, and was told that as the toilets had been built at sea level, drainage was ineffective and sewage was forced back out through the ground.

“City Cleansing has to bring a suction truck in to clean the toilets out as the toilets are ineffective if there is a large volume of usage. I have been told that the municipality will have to demolish the toilets and build them higher above sea level, elsewhere on the grounds. This is a priority as it has been an ongoing problem for a number of years,” she said.

She said cleaning of the sewer line should be starting soon.

“The municipality needs to put funding aside to ensure the facility can be used. There is no point in having a big sporting facility if there are no toilets or change rooms. We need a functional recreational facility for people and it is the responsibility of the municipality to have this resolved,” she said.
