Land invasion thwarted

A group of about 20 people tried to move onto the piece of land in Lacey Road.

QUICK response and intervention from the eThekwini land invasion unit prevented a group of people from moving onto a piece of land at the Lacey Road settlement on Friday night.

According to a resident at the settlement, who could not be identified for fear of victimization, a group of about 20 people tried to move onto the piece of land, but homeowners from the neighbouring Sydneham and Asherville suburbs would not let them and alerted the police.

“Most of the invaders are from other informal settlements and are trying to destabilize the harmony here. We were told that a meeting was held at Mayville by certain individuals claiming to be leaders. Just because they see a patch of land they think they can just build. No one wants them here, that land is earmarked for the building of houses. We are glad that even our neighbors are supportive,” he said.

Ward 31 Councillor Chris Pappas said the group of people made the move on the open piece of land at around midnight.

“The area of land is the old vegetable patch at the existing Lacey Road settlement. According to Metro, SAPS and people on the ground in the settlement the situation is under control with invaders having been dispelled. Thank you to quick work from the Community Policing Forum (CPF) and land invasion unit. We will continue to monitor and intervene as necessary,” he said.
