Art Deco Society pays tribute to founding members

The Society encourages owners of Art Deco style buildings to be aware of their Art Deco heritage

THE Durban Art Deco Society paid tribute to two founding members, Helen Labuschagne and Jean Powell, whose hard work established the society in 2001.

The Society (founded in 1999) comprises a small group of enthusiastic people who try to encourage owners of Art Deco style buildings to be aware of their Art Deco heritage, offer advice on restoration / repainting, and organise lectures / tours, etc.

Jean Powell (ex Chair) with Mike Mulholland, Cynthia Carrick and Shiney Bright.

The society also has a room at Surrey Mansions where archival information and their collection of books about Art Deco are kept – this is open to members and interested persons at specific times. Durban has an important heritage of over 100 significant art deco buildings.

The society plays an active role in monitoring developments affecting them, advising owners, and interacting with the AMAFA Heritage Agency. www.durbandeco.org.za
