Garden spruced up for spring

The garden surrounding the tea garden at Durban Botanic Gardens is being revitalised.

THE garden surrounding the Tea Garden area at Durban Botanic Gardens has been revitalised in time for Arbor Month.

Curator, Martin Clement, said the garden hadn’t been worked on for a long time, and was an old section of the Durban Botanic Gardens. He said as it was at the entrance to the tea garden it was an important garden space and was given priority.

“Sipho Mhlongo and his team are currently re-landscaping the garden and the results will be quite transformative as this very popular refreshment spot gets refreshed. We are in the process of upgrading the tea garden, and we have designed the surrounding garden to be family friendly. We have reduced the height of the plants, added colour and improved the view into the rest of the Gardens,” he said.

He said this revamping of the garden will be the first phase of celebrating the tradition of the tea garden, and will continue right around the tea garden area.

“The work will be completed by the end of September, and it is one a number of horticultural improvement projects in the Gardens. Another project is the Courtyard Garden at the entrance on St Thomas’ Road,” he said.
