Traffic police out in force as MEC ensures safe passage for Reed Dance maidens

More than 2500 law-enforcement offices including SAPS, municipal police and RTI officers, will be deployed along the routes to Nongoma.

LAW enforcement officers will be out in force this weekend as Transport MEC Mxolisi Kaunda ensures that more than 45000 young women and guests being transported to the reed dance festival from across the province at King Goodwill Zwelithini’s palace in Nongoma, arrive at their destination safely.

Kaunda was in Durban to inspect the Durban Transport buses that will transport the young women and warned bus operators and drivers that the department would clamp down on any wrongdoing. More than 2500 law-enforcement offices including SAPS, municipal police and RTI officers, will be deployed along the routes to Nongoma and a number of roadblocks will be stationed along the routes which will focus on drinking and driving, overloading, vehicle roadworthiness, speed and motor and driver’s licenses.

Kaunda also warned that drivers would be randomly tested for alcohol before they left on their journey.
