WARD 31 residents no longer need to run for cover when it rains. The city has installed 39 new bus shelters and replaced a number of old shelters throughout the ward.
Councillor Chris Pappas motivated for shelters after observing the many people standing outside the Atrium Mall after being treated at McCords Eye Hospital as well as people running for cover when it rained rain outside Musgrave Mall.

“From inspection to installation took about five months. The eThekwini Transport Authority was very helpful in this regard. We are currently finalising the designs for benches for the shelters,” said Pappas.
He said a large number of senior citizens lived in the community and hoped the benches and shelters would go a long way in ensuring they were kept dry while using public transport.

“Coming from a town planning background small things like new bus shelters and benches make me excited. People don’t always understand this. A working city has many intricate parts that must all run harmoniously in order to maximise resource usage, promote confidence, provide practical working systems and, in the South African context, overcome the intentional divide created by apartheid spatial planners,” he said.
Pappas said he had received positive feedback from people who have been using the new shelters.
