New album for local muso

Check out Durban's Dave Wright's latest acoustic album

GLENWOOD musician, Dave Wright, has released his new acoustic album, entitled Tomorrow, consisting of nine original songs.

Dave is well-known on the local music scene and has been playing music for the past 30 years. He said the seed was planted at school but that he only followed this passion years later.

“I knew when I was at school that I wanted to do something with music, but this was delayed as I went to varsity and then the army. I met a guy in the army and we formed a band, and it progressed from there,” he said.

Dave has played base and sung in many different bands since then and says he enjoys writing his own lyrics.

“When I was in the band The Mystery Girls, we always played original music,” he said.

Dave’s musical inspirations have been Alice In Chains, Dream Theater and Neil Young. He admits he has a wide musical taste and listens to a lot of different music.

“When Alice In Chains released their unplugged album in the early 90s, it set off a creative spark in me and I started fiddling around with accoustic music. When I was working in Swaziland I wrote a lot of material and released my first solo acoustic album in 2008 entitled Seven Minutes to Ebisu,” he said.

Dave said he took a break after that, but remained involved in music scene promoting concerts and hosting a quiz night with friend, Hylton Forge.

“Playing original music is difficult as it isn’t commercially viable. When it comes to writing songs, I am never short of ideas, there’s always something bouncing around in my mind. I read a lot and get a lot of inspiration from this, I enjoy writing. I decided recently that it was time to do another CD andcompleted the album in May, with the mastering done in England,” he said.

Dave said after the CD was released he had played gigs in and around Durban where, he said, there has been a resurgence in acoustic music of late providing more opportunities to perform.

“My music is all in the third person, and deals with relationship-type things, although it’s never personal. I get a seed and I take it from there. My CD has been well-received and it has been an interesting road. I am extremely happy with the way it has come out,” he said.

Dave will be performing at the Horse Shoe Pub in Prospect Road, Umbilo, on Sunday, 3 September at 3pm.

The CD Tomorrow is on sale at Glenwood Village Music at R50.
