City condemns violent protests

The Municipality has urged residents with grievances to follow the right channels to engage with officials.

ETHEKWINI Municipality says it is deeply concerned over the violent public protests that have rocked the city in recent weeks.

In a media statement on Thursday, the municipality  condemned the violence linked to the protest action over land invasions in Bonela and Mariannridge, which saw protestors blockading roads and torching a municipal bus.

The city said it acknowledged people were free to exercise their constitutional rights by raising their concerns, but cautioned protestors against injuring others and vandalising infrastructure.

It said safety measures, including CCTV cameras, were in place to monitor movements of vehicles and to minimise further traffic disruptions. Law enforcement officers have also been instructed to take necessary action where laws are broken.

The city urged those who have grievances to engage with the municipality through formal channels.
