Shark nets removed at Durban beaches

Unsettled seas and large swells could result in the movement or damage to shark safety gear should it remain in the water.

BATHERS at Suncoast Beach, Bay of Plenty, up to uShaka Beach are warned to consult with lifeguards on duty before entering the water as high seas are expected this evening.

The KZN Sharks Board (KZNSB) has been monitoring the development of a cut-off low pressure system heading for KZN this evening, Wednesday 16 August, and numerous weather and swell forecasting models predict unsettled seas and a strong groundswell of up to 3m.

According to Mike Anderson-Reade, head of operations, the unsettled seas and large swells could cause the shark nets to move or result in damage to the nets if they are left in the water.

“In order to minimise damage or losses the Sharks Board, in consultation with the affected Municipalities, has this morning removed shark safety gear at the majority of protected bathing beaches. Shark safety gear will be replaced as soon as the seas have settled and we are confident that the gear will remain stable,” he said.

Anderson-Reade said beaches will remain open for bathing however this is dependent on the lifeguards who will make appropriate decisions in this regard depending on the prevailing surf conditions.
