Partnerships in the fight against crime can save lives

Berea SAPS is urging the community and organisations to partner with the police to help in the fight against crime.

BEREA SAPS is encouraging the community to work hand in hand with the police.

An example of how effective this partnership is was demonstrated with the arrest of two armed men in Greyville on 5 August.
According to Capt Poobalan Naidoo from Berea SAPS, at around 4pm, Berea crime prevention’s Sgt Banjwa and two other officers received a complaint from radio control about a carjacking in Problem Mkhize (Cowey) Road, Greyville.

“They immediately responded and on arrival interviewed the woman complainant. She informed them that she had been approached by two men who produced a firearm and demanded her vehicle keys. They were disturbed and fled on foot into Marriot Road,” he said.

With the help of the guards on Gladys Mazibuko (Marriot) Road, the suspects were arrested and detained by the K9 Unit.
One pistol was recovered after a witness saw one of the men throw the weapon away as they fled, and informed the police.
“Further investigation will continue. This is good team work. Community participation and support in the fight against crime can save lives,” he said.

Naidoo said the community can assist by identifying crime hot spots and informing the police and reporting any information on wanted suspects and illegal firearms. “The community can help in the fight against crime. We encourage people to visit schools with the SAPS to speak to learners and teachers about crime. It is important to run awareness campaigns on the community’s role to fight crime and to mobilise civil society organisations to become active members of the community policing forum, to support the police in crime prevention initiatives, and to provide possible solutions or alternatives to constantly strengthen partnerships and improve service delivery,” said Naidoo.
