ETHEKWINI Municipality has given the proposal to convert Hunt Road into a one-way the green light.
Ward councillor Mmabatho Tembe said Carlos Esteves, deputy head of Road Systems Management at the municipality had informed her last week that the decision to change the road to a one-way from King Dinuzulu (Berea) Road to Che Guevara (Moore) Road had been approved, following a public participation process and public meeting held in February this year.
“Carlos Esteves has confirmed the one-way change is going ahead, with plans for the work on the road to happen during the school holidays after the third term. I am very glad this is happening as it will definitely help with the general flow of traffic in this road where there is an issue of traffic congestion during the day,” said Tembe.

The majority of residents attending the meeting in February gave the project the go-ahead. At the meeting Esteves said the one-way in Hunt Road was the second phase of the initial Musgrave/Essenwood one-way road system implemented in March 2005. He said a study undertaken regarding the one-way system on these roads identified the need to extend Hunt and Che Guevara Roads.
He said the reasons behind the extension of the system was due largely to the expansion of the Glenwood Village Market Shopping Centre, which raised the issue of the road being closed while trucks offloaded goods to the centre which interrupted the flow of traffic, and the possibility of collisions when vehicles simultaneously departed from the two exits of the centre and moved in opposite directions. In a survey with residents and businesses, other issues such as lack of parking, the safety of pedestrians and general congestion were also mentioned.

Esteves said the one-way system would solve these issues.
