Traffic chaos as police cordon off N2 after shootout

Traffic is being diverted away from the N2 northbound and southbound near Queen Nandi and the highway cordoned off after a shootout and subsequent collision between police and a gang of six armed men earlier this afternoon.

THE N2 southbound, near the Queen Nandi off-ramp and as far as the Umhlanga off-ramp has been closed after a shootout between police and armed suspects earlier this afternoon caused a three-car collision in which a woman had to be freed from her vehicle.  Kyle van Reenen of Marshall Security reports that the N2 northbound has also be cordoned off and is being treated as an active crime scene.

According to Van Reenen  six armed men travelling in a white Mercedes Benz, believed to be part of a cash-in-transit syndicate, attempted to ram the police vehicle off the freeway and a shootout ensued. Both vehicles careened off the roadway, down the median, before colliding with a civilian vehicle driving southbound. “The driver, a woman in her 60s, sustained moderate injuries and was cut free with the Jaws of Life by Rescue Care and Crisis Medical,” he said.

Van Reenen confirmed that two suspects had been killed and a third arrested. The Air Wing Unit and SAPS K9 Unit are still searching the bushes for the remaining three suspects.

Traffic caught up in the congestion has been directed back up the N2 contraflow to the North Coast Road and Kwa Mashu on-ramps.

The N2 southbound between the KwaMashu on-ramp and Queen Nandi Drive off-ramp remains closed.

LATEST UPDATE: It has been confirmed that of the two suspects who fled into the bush, one has been killed and the other arrested.
