Businessman held up, cash stolen

A businessman had returned to his premises in Magwaza Maphalala Street when a gang accosted him.

ARMED robbers held up an Umbilo businessman after he withdrew cash at the bank on Tuesday.

Blue Security community and media liaison officer Andreas Mathios said the businessman had returned to his premises in Magwaza Maphalala Street at around 1.10pm when the gang accosted him.

“The suspects held him up at gunpoint and robbed him of an undisclosed sum of cash. No injuries were reported,” Mathios said.

Mathios advised business owners to be vigilant when visiting the bank as criminals often stake out their victims before striking.

“When you go to the bank, vary the days and times and the route that you take and take a staff member with you. Make sure that you are not being followed when you leave the bank, but if you suspect that someone is following you don’t ignore your suspicion and take a chance, rather be safe and drive to your nearest police station for help,” Mathios said.

He advised business owners to consider paying staff electronically to avoid the need to carry large sums of cash from the bank.
