Ministry celebrates 150 years

Scripture Union will be celebrating 150 years internationally with an event on Saturday.

SCRIPTURE Union (SU) is celebrating 150 years of ministry across the world with a special gathering at Berea Congregational Church, Pardy Gardens Road, off Musgrave Road, on Saturday, 22 July from 9am.

Jayce Naidoo, regional director of SU in Durban, said the celebratory event will bring together all who have been involved with SU in Durban since 1925.

“Scripture Union was started in the United Kingdom in 1867 and Frank Millard, together with Harold Herringshaw, started the beach missions in Durban in 1925 where they brought children to Durban and ran a programme with them. So we will be celebrating 93 years in November,” he said.

Jayce said over the years there had been many committed leaders and volunteers connected with SU to help grow the ministry, which he said aims at impacting young lives, and transforming these lives with hope.

Jayce is dedicated to the ministry having been involved with SU for the past 19 years, following 20 years as part of the military where he served with the SA Navy.

“I went from the military to ministry! I thought if I could give 20 years to the military, I could give as many years to ministry, following my passion for children and my love for God,” he said.

SU works with schools, runs camps, holiday clubs, school Christian clubs, distributes Bibles, runs the Reach for Life Programme, Children’s Bible clubs and a computer training centre in Chatsworth. The office at 70 Musgrave Road also has a book shop which is open to the public.

The community is invited to celebrate with SU on Saturday. To attend, RSVP to Veronique on 031 202 6881 or email KZN@SU.ORG.ZA.
