Six suspects in court, four firearms recovered

All the suspects were positively identified on CCTV footage for armed robberies committed in the CBD.

DURBAN Central Field unit conducted an intelligence-driven operation in the Central Business District raiding wanted suspects for armed robberies on 27 June.

According to Captain Nqobile Gwala from provincial SAPS, while patrolling along Lancers Road Market, officers received information about an armed robbery suspect that was believed to be around the market area.

“They proceeded to the said place where they arrested a 27-year-old suspect who was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm with 23 live rounds of ammunition. The suspect lead the members to UMlazi Y section where a 43-year-old suspect was arrested and found in possession of an unlicensed pistol. The intelligence driven information lead them further to Folweni where they arrested a 42-year-old suspect who was found in possession of ammunition and suspected stolen property,” said Gwala.

All the suspects were positively identified on CCTV footage for armed robberies committed in the CBD. The arrested suspects will be charged for armed robbery, possession of unlicensed firearms, ammunition and possession of suspected stolen property.

KwaZulu-Natal acting provincial commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa praised the members for their operations that led to the recovery of unlicensed firearms. “Such operations will continue throughout the province to curb the robberies from being committed. The confiscation of firearms prevent the serious crimes from being committed and even the loss of life,” he said.
