BRICKFIELD Road was the target of criminals this weekend when an armed robbery and home invasion occurred within days of each other.

On Friday night, armed robbers held up staff and customers at a business premises in the road and fled with cash and other valuables.

Blue Security community and media liaison officer Andreas Mathios, said two armed men stormed into the shop and held up staff at gunpoint at around 6.40pm.

“The men forced staff and customers to lie on the floor and demanded that the safe in the office be opened. They fled with an undisclosed sum of cash from a cash register, a CCTV DVR, a cellphone and other goods from the business,” he said.

Mathios said the gang fled in a blue VW Polo Vivo. No injuries were reported and Sydenham SAPS attended the scene of the crime.

On Sunday, a 76-year-old woman was lucky to escape a home invasion unharmed.

Mathios said the woman’s granddaughter had just dropped her off at home in Brickfield Road at around 8pm when she was accosted by two men.

“The men were waiting at the main entrance and when she opened the house both suspects went inside with her. They ransacked the main bedroom and a second bedroom and fled with televisions, a decoder, a computer, a safe, jewellery, cash, linen and clothing,” Mathios said.

He said the men did not produce a firearm and no injuries were reported. Sydenham SAPS attended the scene.
