Botsoc hosts ecology talks

Renowned botanist, Prof Eugene Moll, will speak at field courses and a BotSoc meeting this weekend.

THE Botanical Society of South Africa KZN Coastal Branch will host two events with renowned botanist, Prof Eugene Moll, at the weekend.

There will be one-day field course in tree identification and forest ecology with Prof Moll on Saturday, 8 July at Hawaan Forest, Umhlanga, on Sunday, 9 July at Krantzkloof Nature Reserve, Kloof and Tuesday, 11 July Umdoni Park, Pennington at 8.45am for 9am to 3pm each day.

Prof Moll, author of many popular and scientific botanical books including the field guide, Trees of Natal, and What’s That Tree? and editor of Coates Palgrave, will teach in an easy-to-understand, interactive way.

On Monday, 10 July, Prof Moll will present a talk entitled From Acacia to Zanthoxylum – the story behind ‘The Illustrated Dictionary of Southern African Plant Names at Durban Botanic Gardens Visitors Centre at 6pm.

He will discuss the interesting challenges and thrilling research involved in compiling Hugh Clarke’s book, The Illustrated Dictionary of Southern African Plant Names, of which he is the editor. Books will be on sale at a special price of R395.

All welcome. Entrance, including refreshments, is R40 for members of BotSoc, R60 for visitors and R30 for students with cards. Pay at the door.
