Relief efforts for Kennedy Road fire victims

Organisations and the community has assisted with food and clothing for victims of the Kennedy Road fire.

A SHACK at the Kennedy Road Settlement on Sunday night has left a number of families homeless.

According to ward 25 councillor, Hassan Haniff, almost 200 shacks were razed to the ground in the fire.

“I was at a site again today and it was not looking good at all. Most of the residents took off from work to start building their shacks again from whatever materials they could salvage from the fire. I got the Disaster Management and Human Settlements Department to come in and assess the damage and take names of those who were affected so that the municipality could assist with building materials,” he said, adding that many of the residents sought shelter at friends and family homes on Sunday night.

According to the eThekwini Municipality, officials from the Disaster Management and Emergency Control Unit have offered temporary shelter and relief to about 173 residents from the settlement who were left homeless.

Working with the Shoprite Soup Kitchen and the Al Imdaad Foundation, the Municipality has secured food and blankets for residents who are currently being housed at the local community hall. Haniff said he had asked for relief assistance and said many organisations had come forward to assist.

“They have brought cooked food, blankets and clothing, and the community is also assisting,” he said.

No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is still being investigated.
