Suspected car thief killed in shootout with police

Berea SAPS arrested two alleged car thieves following a high speed chase and shootout on Tuesday night.

AN alleged car thief was killed, another wounded and two others arrested after a high speed chase with Berea police on Tuesday night.

According to police, Berea SAPS officers were on patrol in Gordon Road at around 6pm when they saw the men attempting to steal a vehicle. Lt Col Thulani Zwane from provincial SAPS, said one of the men was arrested, while the other three fled the scene in a getaway vehicle.

Police chased the vehicle through Berea with the men shooting at police. The police returned fire and the high speed chase ended in the CBD when the driver crashed the vehicle. Rescue Care Paramedics arrived on the scene in Field Street to find the police in attendance. Garrith Jamieson from Rescue Care said paramedics found one man had sustained a single gunshot wound to his abdomen.

“He was in a serious condition and was stabilised on the scene before being transported to hospital,” he said.

Another suspect was killed in the shooting and the fourth was arrested by police. Zwane said two handguns were recovered in the vehicle. The men will be charged with attempted car theft, attempted murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm.
