Suspects vehicle linked to crime incidents across Durban

The suspects managed to evade Marshall Security in a high speed car chase and exchange of fire.

A MARSHALL Security officer was involved in a high speed chase and shootout with suspects in Morningside earlier this evening.

At around 5.15pm, while on a routine patrol on Soofie Shaeb Drive in Durban North, a Marshall Security armed reaction officer noticed a suspicious vehicle, a black Mercedes Benz, and followed the vehicle while relaying information to the emergency contact centre.

The vehicle fitted the registration and description of a vehicle wanted for the commission of several crimes in the greater Durban and surrounding areas.

The driver of the vehicle noticed he was being followed and attempted to evade arrest by speeding away in a southerly direction on Masabalala Yengwa (NMR) Avenue, with the Marshall Security in pursuit. The vehicle turned up Simso Nkwanyana (Goble) Road before taking a turn onto Percy Osborn Road where it came to a stop.

Two occupants of the Mercedes Benz got out of the vehicle brandishing AK47 rifles, firing several shots at the officer who took cover, returning fire, with several high caliber rounds striking the officer’s vehicle.

The security officer’s vehicle was damaged in the shootout.

The suspects fled in the vehicle towards Umgeni Road while additional resources and members of the South African Police Services rushed to the scene.

An extensive search of the area was conducted however the suspects managed to evade arrest.

The Marshall Security armed reaction officer was unharmed in the ordeal.
