Rubbish piles up as refuse workers go on strike

The Municipality is urging the public to continue to put out their refuse as per the normal collection days during the employee’s strike action.

RUBBISH is piling up across the Berea while Durban Solid Waste workers strike.

Janet James, who lives on Bellville Road in Musgrave says refuse has not been collected in weeks.

“The filth made by the refuse bags lying on the ground is bad for the image of area as it gives it a bad name.”

“The stench coming from those bags is bad, we just want the city to collect the refuse. I have tried to get hold of the Durban Solid Waste department without any success,” she said.

EThekwini Municipality’s Durban Solid Waste (DSW) said it was experiencing challenges with service delivery after workers embarked on strike action on Monday.

However, the municipality urges residents to continue to put out their refuse as per the normal collection days while the strike continues.

DSW Deputy Head Robert Abbu said: “If the refuse is not collected by the afternoon, residents should take their refuse in and put it out on the next collection day. The municipality appeals to the public to please be patient.”

In a Facebook post, ward councillor Mmabatho Tembe said workers had been on strike for three days and had parked the trucks at the depot, effectively blocking the depot.

She said senior managers are in talks regarding the situation.
