Founder of the support group You’re Magical, is encouraging people to spend some time with her at Essenwood Market on Saturday, to get to know more about the group.

FAMILIES and people living with Down Syndrome are encouraged to attend a “meet and greet” on Saturday, 3 June at the Essenwood Craft Market on Stephen Dlamini Road, Musgrave at 9.30am.

Durban mom and founder of the support group called You’re Magical, Trudy Chetty, is encouraging people to spend some time with her and get to know more about the support group.

“I designed the group to assist people with Down Syndrome, to let them know they are special, gifted and unique, and I would love for more people to join the group on Saturday,” she said.

Trudy, whose son Triysten has Down Syndrome, said her mission was to create and nurture a loving and inclusive community celebrating every person with a disability.

“We will accomplish this mission by empowering and supporting families and individuals who have been touched by Down Syndrome. We want to work together to increase education, promote public understanding and acceptance, work toward full inclusion, and defend the civil rights of individuals with Down Syndrome,” she said.

One of the services the group will offer is speech and occupational therapies, free of charge.

“Children with Down Syndrome have speech impediments and this service will help families that cannot afford specialist fees.

Something people may not be aware of, for instance, is the need for babysitters. Many parents who care for children with disabilities often need a night off. Babysitters is also one of the services to be offered by You’re Magical,” she said.
