City establishes environmental forum to tackle dumping

The city is set to tackle illegal dumping and littering.

ETHEKWINI Mayor, Zandile Gumede announced this week at a meeting of Exco that an environmental forum will be established to address the low levels of environmental management, littering and illegal dumping in the city.

Illegal dumping occurs across all areas of the Berea with local ward councillors receiving a constant stream of complaints from residents fed up with illegal dumping on vacant lots, abandoned properties, pavements and on some council-owned residential estates. A number of community projects in partnership with Durban Solid Waste have been initiated in recent years to clean up areas where illegal dumping and littering is prevalent.

“There needs to be a collaborative approach among city departments in how we address these challenges. Through the environmental forum we will ensure that the city is kept clean. We should also make opportunities available for local communities so that they become part of this programme,” she said.

“I will be championing this environmental forum through the Operation Sukuma Sakhe programme which is already operational. This will ensure that the City is clean while providing opportunities for the poor,” she said.
