It is alleged that the Khans’ father, Saleem, an insurance broker, was the target of the “hate crime”.

THE three members of a Berea family who were injured when a package bomb exploded at their home on Friday, are still in hospital.

According to reports, Zakaria Khan, who lost two fingers and a thumb in the explosion, remains in a medically-induced coma while his wife, Maseeha, and his grandmother, Sara-Bibi Khan, sustained serious injuries when they were hit by shrapnel in the face and legs when the package exploded.

The package was delivered to their home in Stephen Dlamini (Essenwood) Road on Friday afternoon.

Capt Poobalan Naidoo from Berea SAPS said the package was opened in the lounge.

It is believed the bomb had been hidden in a flower package that arrived with a card on which was written: “Get well soon mom”. When Khan opened the card, it triggered the bomb.

Rescue Care’s Garrith Jamieson said paramedics had rushed to the scene but the injured had already been transported to hospital when they arrived. A second bomb was found a few hours later, which members of the SAPS explosives unit handled in a controlled detonation.
