Ward committee assigns portfolios

The role of Ward committees is to advise the ward Councillor and to facilitate community engagement within their portfolio

THE ward 31 Ward committee sat for its inaugural meeting on Monday, to elect portfolios and the ward committee secretary.

The ward committee is an advisory committee to the councillor. Ward 31 Councillor, Chris Pappas said the role of ward committees is to advise the ward councillor and to facilitate community engagement within their portfolio.

“It is important for the community to note that ward committee members should not be acting independently of the ward councillor, nor should they be making official representation on behalf of the public without going through the ward councillor. The ward councillor is the chairperson of the committee. Ward committee members receive R1000 a month as as stipend for any costs they may incur,” said Pappas.

Each member is required to establish a subcommittee of between five and ten people from ward 31. These people must add value and contribute to the effective functioning of the respective portfolios. I would like to encourage professionals and people with expertise in the portfolios to get involved by contacting the relevant committee member,” he said.

“I will be providing frequent feedback to the community on the performance and progress of the ward committee in line with the relevant legislation. I look forward to working with this diverse group of people who have a history of working in the best interests of the community. We hope to make a positive difference in the lives of the residents of ward 31 (Sydenham, Asherville, Musgrave, and Overport),” he said.
