Child’s death sparks massive outcry
A public meeting has been called following the tragic death of a seven year old child who was knocked down in Sparks Road on Thursday afternoon.
SYDENHAM residents have come out in protest after a seven-year-old child died after being knocked down at the corner of Sparks and Barnes Road on Thursday afternoon.

In a Facebook post, ward councillor Chris Pappas said Sparks Road had become a death trap. “Our community has had to deal with yet another great tragedy today. Another child, another life has been lost on Sparks Road,” he said.
Pappas said he had on several occasions called for speed calming measures on Sparks Road but had been met with resistance from all departments.
” We must ask ourselves why this keeps happening despite having tried all available means for this road to be safer,” he said.

“I have requested speed bumps, traffic lights, barriers, speed cameras, warning lights, traffic circles…all requests have been turned down thus far. We are told about policies, budgets and statistics while our loved ones are killed and injured,” he said.

Pappas said a public meeting had been called where political and administrative leaders would be invited to answer to the community. The meeting will be held on 26 May at the Sydenham Community Centre at 6pm.
