Manor Gardens Primary school learners were exposed to the world of science and technology on Friday when the KZN Science Centre presented a special morning of experiments and fun at the school.

South Africans need to become innovators and not just end-users of products and technology. Manor Gardens Primary school learners were exposed to the world of science and technology on Friday when the KZN Science Centre presented a special morning of experiments and fun at the school.
The special visit by the KZN Science Centre was part of the prize won by Grade 7 learner, David Dingane, who came second in the inaugural Mind Blown Tournament held at the Sahara Stadium last December.
Sixteen schools from the Durban area participated in the tournament with the winning schools receiving cash prizes. Dingane said he enjoys science and when he grows up, wants to be an IT specialist.
MindBlown is a 100 per cent locally produced collectable card game from concept to creation by Berea-based edu-tech company, Rebel Rabble. MindBlown aims to prepare young people for an innovation-based economy by sparking curiosity in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths.
The game has attracted rave reviews from local innovators and education specialists who hail it as a breakthrough in boosting curiosity among learners.
Isobel Sobey, the educator who runs the Mind Blown club at the school said she noticed a visible excitement in her learners since they started playing the game. They were exploring topics such as the solar system, animal kingdom, finding wow facts and other interesting bits of information.
“The learners look forward to Thursday afternoons – which is our club day. It’s a fun afternoon with lots of facts and discussion. We have exceptional learners who think differently and the game strategy encourages learners to find unusual facts,” Sobey said.
This year’s tournament is expected to be bigger than ever. The huge interest in the tournament has prompted the organisers to establish a Berea league. All schools in Berea, Glenwood, Musgrave, Morningside and surrounds are encouraged to attend the launch of the Berea league on Thursday, 18 May from 2 pm to 3.30 pm at Manor Gardens Primary, 95 Dale Road, Berea.
Schools are requested to send a minimum of 4 learners and 1 educator from Grades 5-10.The launch will include a demonstration of the game and a mini-tournament with some prizes to be won.
