Strong gales force closure of country club and eThekwini beaches

This decision was taken after careful deliberation with the South African Weather Bureau and the Sharks Board.

STRONG winds and high seas are expected this weekend, forcing eThekwini Municipality to close some of its bathing beaches as shark nets will be lifted .

The Guest Relations Officer at the KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board Maritime Centre of Excellence, Sipho Mkhize said the KZNSB Operational management team has been monitoring the progress of a very strong south westerly system that arrived off the KZN coastline yesterday evening.

“The system is expected to produce a strong southerly groundswell and fresh south westerly winds for a period of three (3) to possibly four days.”

“Large swells and very unsettled seas may result in movement and damage to shark safety gear. In order to minimize damage or losses the KZNSB, in consultation with the affected Municipalities, has removed shark safety gear at a number of bathing beaches this morning ahead of the unsettled weather,” Mkhize said.

The municipality said that all other beaches will remain open for the Four Element Ocean challenge, an open water swim challenge, which will commence on Saturday, 13 May at 7:30am and will continue until Sunday, 14 May.
