High seas forecast forces closure of Durban beaches

Two Durban beaches have been closed due to weather warnings of high seas this weekend which requires shark nets to be lifted.

THE expected cold weather and high seas forecast for this weekend has forced eThekwini Municipality to temporarily close the Country Club and Thekwini beaches.

According to the city’s head of communications, Tozi Mthethwa, the decision was taken after careful deliberation with the South African Weather Bureau and the Sharks Board.  The closure entails the lifting of shark nets at the two beaches.

However, all other beaches will remain open for the Four Element Ocean challenge, an open water swim challenge, which takes place on Saturday, 13 May at 7:30am and will continue until Sunday, 14 May.

The city apologised for any inconvenience and will notify the public once the two beaches are re-opened.
