Durban workmen leave pavement in disrepair

"The hole in the ground is full of rubbish and there is the danger of pedestrians having to walk into the road as they are unable to use the pavement."

ROADWORKS left unattended in Playfair Road, Durban, are yet another example of the lack of communication between various municipal departments.

This is the opinion of Councillor Nicole Graham, following reports and complaints by residents of Eden Roc retirement home which backs onto Playfair Road.

“I have had calls from residents who said a company had dug up the road to lay cables, however the pavement has been left in a terrible state of disrepair,” she said.

Graham said residents told her there had been similar work done further along the road, but that the pavement had been attended to.

She said her concern was that the pavement had been left in this condition for some time, and she felt it was a hazard. “The hole in the ground is full of rubbish and there is the danger of pedestrians having to walk into the road as they are unable to use the pavement. It is a very busy area and the elderly walk around a lot in this part of the city. I am also concerned as the electrical box has been dug up which is dangerous,” she said.

Graham said she reported the issue to the municipality last week as it needs urgent repair.

“I will follow up this week to see if it is going to be attended to. It is a common problem in the City where a department will do work but will not repair the infrastructure it has dug up afterwards. It is not good enough,” she said.
