Traditional leaders join portfolio committees to fast track service delivery

Traditional leaders, who are within the boundaries of eThekwini Municipality, will fully participate in the affairs and activities of the Municipality to fast-track service delivery.

TRADITIONAL leaders, who fall within the boundaries of eThekwini Municipality, have been allocated to various portfolio committees where they will play an integral role in fast-tracking service delivery.

In a media release this week, eThekwini Municipality said around 17 traditional leaders in the Municipality’s jurisdiction will sit in on various portfolio committees.

At the recent inaugural meeting of the Governance and Human Resources Committee, chairman Councillor Barbara Fortein welcomed Chief Nkosinathi Maphumulo, whose jurisdiction includes wards 96,105 and 109, to the meeting.

Fortein said traditional leaders, who are within the boundaries of eThekwini Municipality, would fully participate in the affairs and activities of the Municipality to fast-track service delivery.

“We are excited to have traditional leaders in our operation since they have an important role to play. We will certainly maintain the good working relationship we have created with traditional leaders,” said Fortein.

She added that elected councillors and traditional leaders must work together to ensure communities received the highest level of service delivery.

Chief Maphumulo said: “It is a good idea to be part of the City’s portfolio committees.

However, I need to update myself with what has been discussed at previous meetings so that I will be on par with councillors and senior officials. I also feel that communities must be given a platform to convey their feelings and make requests for services to the Municipality.”
