MUVO card users urged to check expiry date

Commuters are advised to check for an expiry date on the front of their MUVO card.

ETHEKWINI Municipality has issued a reminder to holders of MUVO Cards that expire in April or July to ensure the cards are swapped out by August in order to receive a free replacement card.

The eThekwini Municipality’s cashless payment system, MUVO SmartCard, which replaced the old paper coupon previously used on public transport, expires, like any other smartcard, after five years.

The cards, which are currently being used on Durban Transport buses, the People Mover and Mynah buses, all have expiry dates and the first two batches, which were issued in 2012, are due to expire at the end of April and end of July.

Commuters are advised to check for an expiry date on the front of their card, and if it expires in April or July 2017, it can be replaced, free of charge, until the end of August 2017. After this, commuters will be charged the normal fee of R20 for replacement cards.

When applying for a new card, commuters must produce their identity document, and can do so at any mobile MUVO SmartVan or Paypoint.

After the expiry date the cards will no longer work, and users will not be able to load any trips. Unused trips will be transferred to the new card immediately on swapping before the expiry date, however, after the expiry date, it will take 7 days for the trips to reflect on the cards.

Commuters are reminded to continue checking the expiry date on their cards and to swap them out prior to the card expiring.
