Court grants interdict against ANCYL at Kathrada’s Durban memorial

Fears for the safety of Pravin Gordhan, who will be guest speaker at a memorial service for Ahmed Kathrada, forced the organisers, the Active Citizen's Group to seek a High Court interdict against the ANCYL.

THE Active Citizens Group, organisers behind the memorial service for Ahmed Kathrada at Sastri College, Durban on Sunday afternoon 9 April, have been granted an interdict by the High Court against the ANC Youth League who reportedly announced they would be attending the event in which former Finance Minister, Pravin Gordhan is a guest speaker.

According to a Media 24 report, Judge Rashid Vahed made the ruling that the ANCYL could attend the service, but had to behave and issue a caution to their members to do the same, via the media and on social media. The Active Citizens Group filed the urgent application on Friday. The ANCYL filed an opposing affidavit late on Friday evening.
Ben Madokwe of the civic group said the action had been taken as the group feared for the safety of Gordhan, who has had his loyalty to the ANC questioned in recent weeks.
The media report quoted ANCYL provincial secretary Tanduxolo Sabelo as denying there was any threat to disrupt the memorial service. He said members of the ANCYL intended only to pay tribute to Kathrada.
The memorial service will take place at Sastri College in Durban at 2.30pm on Sunday.

On Friday, ANCYL members attacked a DA member after the #MarchForChange ended outside the Pavilion Hotel on Durban’s beachfront. It is alleged the ANCYL members had deviated from their planned route to Absa Bank in Anton Lembede Street, when they accosted Bob Lemon of the DA and assaulted him.
The DA lay charges of incitement to violence against the ANC at Durban Central Police Station on Saturday morning.
