Mayor retracts threat to arrest protestors

Gumede agreed that people were free to exercise their constitutional rights, but cautioned protestors against injuring others and vandalising infrastructure.

ETHEKWINI Mayor, Zandile Gumede has reportedly retracted the comments she allegedly made on SABC radio this morning warning protestors who March for Change on Friday that they would be arrested by law enforcement officers.

According to a report in IOL, the Municipality has issued a statement in which it confirms that permission has been granted for the People’s March starting from the circus site near the old Durban Drive In.

Permission has also been granted for an ANC Youth League march which is due to take place in the CBD on Friday as well. The city has ensured Metro Police officers will be visible along both marches.

While Gumede agreed that people were free to exercise their constitutional rights, she cautioned protestors against injuring others and vandalising infrastructure. The Municipality said protestors must not blockade roads, or prevent citizens from going to school and work.
