Mayville police arrest armed suspect

The arrest comes after the warrant officer received a complaint of a man allegedly threatening an employee at the Sparks Road car wash.

DETECTIVE Warrant Officer David Nzama and Crime Prevention officers at the Mayville Police station arrested a suspect for the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

The arrest comes after the officer received a complaint about a male at a car wash on Sparks Road who was allegedly threatening an employee with a firearm. On his arrival at the car wash he found the suspect had already left the scene. A brief description of the suspect assisted Detective Warrant Officer Nzama in being able to trace the suspect.

Mayville Police spokesperson, WO Patrick Zithulele Ngwane said: “Upon investigation, the suspect was recognised on Brickfield Road from the positive description provided to Detective Warrant Officer Nzama. He called for backup and a team of Crime Prevention officers arrived swiftly to assist.”

“They approached the 28 year old man and searched him. Police found a magnum revolver with six rounds in his possession.”

The suspect was arrested and detained at the SAPS Mayville Police Cells for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. A second charge of intimidation was also filed.

He is expected to appear at Durban Magistrate Court next week.
