Incident free day at Sassa payout points in Durban

Over 2,6 million beneficiaries have already accessed their grants.

IT was an incident free day at South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) payout points in Durban on Monday. Government also announced that as early as 10am, 2, 6 million beneficiaries had already accessed their grants. The Minister of Social Development, Bathabile Dlamini, MECs, local government leaders and various SASSA officials were reportedly on the ground countrywide responding to queries and monitoring the payments.

At the Sassa offices at Durban station it was business as usual. Thembeka Sibanyoni who is a grant recipient said:

“There were no problems today except for the long queues but we are used to that. I was never worried about not receiving my grant money and I am happy that everyone received their money.”

Dlamini said: “Government remains committed to improving the living conditions of poor, vulnerable and underprivileged South Africans. The social assistance programme remains an important safety net for millions of South Africans.”

Social grant increase also became effective on 1 April. The old age grant increased by R90 to R1600 for pensioners over the age of 60, and R1620 for those over 75. The disability and care dependency grants increase by R90 to R1600 a month. Foster care grants increased by R30 to R920 a month. The child support grant increased by R20 to R380 a month.
