Glenwood couple celebrate 50 golden years

Robert and Geraldine Cairnduff celebrated 50 years of marriage.

ROBERT and Geraldine Cairnduff recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

The Glenwood couple, who were both born deaf, said they got to know each other when they met at a friend’s house in Durban North many years ago, and Robert fell in love!

The couple courted for two years before they were married at Holy Trinity Church in Musgrave.

Robert said they had known each other at school at St Vincent School for the Deaf, where they both received a good education and were taught to lip read and communicate through sign language. He had previously also been a pupil at Open Air School.

Today, the proud couple has three daughters who have no hearing impairments, and whom Robert described as hard-working and “amazing”.

“We are very proud of our girls. One of them lives in the UK and the others live in Westville and Durban North. Our oldest daughter is very good at sign language. It wasn’t easy to deal with children as it was hard work to communicate with them,” he said.

Robert worked at the City Engineers Department in Durban for 40 years until he retired. Geraldine worked at Bayhead.

After retiring, the couple took a trip to Singapore, Hong Kong and Australia, which they both thoroughly enjoyed.

Geraldine passes her time by watching TV and enjoys shows with subtitles. They both also enjoy reading.

“I am very proud of my wife. She is a wonderful, amazing woman! We have been very happy,” said Robert.

The couple celebrated their anniversary with a party with family in Durban North.
