Sydenham drug bust nets heroin worth R1m

The suspects aged between 17 and 25 were caught by various units who were conducting an operation in the Sydenham area.

FOUR alleged drug dealers are due to appear today in the Durban Magistrate’s Court for dealing in drugs.

The suspects aged between 17 and 25 were caught by various units working in the Sydenham area.

According to Lt Col Thulani Zwane from SAPS, officers have been observing a flat in Wattle Grove, Sydenham since 21 March.

“They kept seeing persons visiting premises and leaving with packages and further sales taking place at a nearby garage,” he said.

On 26 March at about noon, officers went to the flat and found four suspects packaging heroin powder into empty capsules.

“Police recovered 15 000 heroin capsules, two kilograms of heroin powder and 100 000 empty capsules. The estimated value of the recovered drugs is about R1 million,” he said.

KwaZulu-Natal acting provincial commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa welcomed the arrests and praised the members for exposing the drugs dealers.

“An in-depth investigation will be launched into the drug activities so that the drug suppliers can be identified and dealt with accordingly,” he said.
