Burning warehouse: Owner launches investigation into cause of fire

Day three of the warehouse blaze, and still the fire burns and smoke billows into the atmosphere.

AS exhausted Durban fire-fighting teams prepare to battle the warehouse blaze for the third consecutive day, property owner, Transnet, has indicated it will be launching its own investigation into the cause of the fire and measure the extent of the damage.

Reports from the scene this morning show that the fire is well under control although visibility is still being hampered by the thick plume of smoke that has been hanging over Durban skies since Friday. Thus far, only three people have been treated for injuries.

The fire is still burning in hot spots, fueled by the wax panels stored in the warehouse and windy conditions. Fire-fighters expect to be at the scene for some time still.

Meanwhile, a number of residents across the Berea say they are suffering from tight chests, streaming eyes and respiratory problems they believe are triggered by the dense smoke.  Many complained of headaches and a resident also said she had suffered asthma attacks.

Saturday’s rain brought the fine black soot down which covered homes and vehicles parked outside.
