Zakes Mda talks decolonized education in our Universities

It is important for local Universities and libraries to reflect more of African content

ACCLAIMED writers, Zakes Mda and Sebata-Mpho Mokae made an appearance at the Time of the Writer session at the KZN society of the Arts in Glenwood on Thursday. The event continues to be a platform that allows cultural producers to unpretentiously define, examine, realign or underline the philosophical and burning issues facing the globe. The ever-prolific author Mda, said a decolonized education was important in ensuring that students learn more about themselves.

“It is important for local universities and libraries to reflect more African content rather than the Euro-centric perspective they currently reflect,” said Mda.

Sebata-Mpho Mokae , winner of the South African Literary Award in 2011 and Creative Writing Lecturer at the Sol Plaatje University in Kimberley was also part of the panel. He said the Sol Plaatje University in Kimberley was setting up a program that would ensure students doing their MA in creative writing, would be able to write them in their mother tongue.

The panel also touched on social media, with Mda saying the older generation should not talk disparagingly of the social media because it was part of the new greatness that is coming.
