Kidnapping accused granted bail

The two accused in the alleged kidnapping of a Durban baby on Friday afternoon have been released on bail.

THE two accused in the alleged hijacking and kidnapping of a Durban baby on Friday have been released on R1000 bail each. Durban Magistrates Court was packed  to capacity this morning as the two accused made their second court appearance.  Kidnapping charges were not mentioned and reports appear to indicate that these have been dropped. The two accused however will face charges of fraud over wasted police resources and defeating the ends of justice for the bogus hijacking.

The state did not object to the proposed R1000 bail application for each of the accused.  According to twitter reports, the attorney for one of the accused said his client had no previous convictions. The mother of the child, according to her attorney, is a school teacher who has three other children and is the sole breadwinner.

On Monday the court ordered paternity tests to determine who the father of the kidnapped baby is.  Investigations into the alleged kidnapping and hijacking revealed that the child’s mother was involved in a relationship with a man who claims to be the legitimate father of the baby girl.

The accused will be back in court on 9 May.
