Botanic Gardens bandit busted

ADT Security guard, Nlungisi Ngcumisa, was on night duty in Durban Botanic Gardens when he noticed a suspicious individual tampering with machinery in the storage area.

A PRIVATE security officer has been praised for his bravery which led to the arrest of a suspected thief, who is now in police custody.

ADT Security guard, Nlungisi Ngcumisa, was on night duty in Durban Botanic Gardens when he noticed a suspicious individual tampering with machinery in the storage area. Officer Ngumisa immediately activated his panic button to notify the ADT Control Room to dispatch armed response back up.

“All our community security scheme guards are supported by 24/7 backup from our ADT monitoring centre in case of an emergency. This means that when a guard encounters an emergency he can activate a panic button knowing that armed response is on the way to offer backup support,” explained ADT Security’s district manager (KwaZulu-Natal), Ivan Govender.

Officer Ngumisa confronted the suspect who then fled on foot. A chase ensued and Ngumisa successfully apprehended the suspect who was handed over for arrest to members of the Berea SAPS.

“I am proud of the officer’s courageousness which ensured that the criminal has now been placed behind bars. The collective efforts of our armed response officers and community security scheme guards are unquestionably making a positive contribution to the fight against crime in the Berea and surrounding areas,” said Govender.
