Porn, illegal DVDs destroyed

Joint operations were conducted with the Film and Publication Board, SAPS and Metro Police and cases were opened and were successfully prosecuted.

MORE than 50 000 DVDs were destroyed last week at Oricol, Durban, by means of crushing.

According to Rajesh Vishnu, regional co-ordinator for the Film and Publication Board in Musgrave, these DVDs included pornographic, English, South African, Nollywood, Bollywood and music DVDs which were confiscated over the last six months from illegal distributors in Pietermaritzburg and Durban. It also included abandoned DVDs.

“Joint operations were conducted with the Film and Publication Board, SAPS and Metro Police and cases were opened and were successfully prosecuted.”

“All these films do not contain age restrictions which make them illegal and in contravention of the Films and Publications Act,” said Vishnu.

He said recently a lot of porn material was being sold in areas like The Workshop flea market, Warwick Avenue, a market in Greyville, in Chatsworth, in Phoenix and the Pietermaritzburg CBD.

“The protection of children is a priority of the Film and Publication Board and we will continue to clamp down on illegal content whether in the form of DVDs or online,” said Vishnu.
