Quiz night challenge

Residents are invited to join weekly quiz nights in Glenwood.

ENJOY a fun night out every week and test your general knowledge at quiz night at Stella Sports Club.

Organised by Durban Rock Alliance members, Hylton Forge and Dave Wright, the quiz has been successfully running for eight months. There is a core of between 20 to 30 people each week but the organisers are hoping more people will join the fun.

“We have had a good run, but we are looking for new people to join us. It’s been our mantra from the word go that the evening will be a lot of fun, although we do have some competitive people who like to stretch themselves and enjoy a challenge,” said Hylton.

Forge and Wright admitted that it takes them around three to four hours each to prepare questions for the quiz night and that they have insight into a lot of topics.

“We get ideas and then do research on these. It’s a lot of fun putting the quiz together. It’s definitely not a quiz you can study for, you need a good general knowledge and a team made up of different age groups with different interests and passions for various topics. The team is only as strong as its members, and we like to include something for everyone,” said Wright

The quiz is made up of different topics every week and is not predictable. The evening starts off with 20 general questions with topics across the board, which is followed by 10 questions on topics such as World War II and space travel, for example.

“We try include a picture round every time such as famous people, flags of the world, company logos and music album covers and finish with snatches of music. It is certainly never boring!” he said.

The evening ends with a ‘jackpot’ question. Each week a lucky draw of R10 is taken and a ticket is drawn. If the person answers a question correctly, they get the money in the lucky draw pool.

The quiz includes 70 to 80 questions every week and runs for two hours on a Wednesday, from 7pm to 9pm.

“With the quiz being in the middle of the week, we don’t like to finish late. We have a dedicated room at Stella where there is no interference and there is a good kitchen, so people can order food. It’s a good night out,” said Forge

Cost of entry is R10 a person, with teams of up to six people. The money is pooled and goes to the winning team on the night, so the more people, the bigger the prize.
