Attend climate change public hearing

The hearing encompasses six outstanding themes, air quality and health, energy, livelihoods, poverty and inequality, poor development, and oil and gas exploration.

THE South Durban Community Environmental Alliance (SDCEA) will hold a Climate Change Provincial Public Hearing on 7 March at Diakonia Council of Churches from 9am to 3pm.

SDCEA hosted the first Climate Change Provincial Hearing on 17 November 2017, and the next hearing will be themed ‘Preventing dangerous anthropogenic interference with the climate systems’. SDCEA will be targeting major issues that pose detrimental threats to the environment and the lives of people.

The hearing encompasses six outstanding themes, air quality and health, energy, livelihoods, poverty and inequality, poor development, and oil and gas exploration.

“Opening up new offshore areas to drilling, risks permanent damage to our oceans and beaches without reducing our dependence on oil.”If these plans were to go ahead, the climate crisis, which is not factored in and taken seriously, would be intensified and South Africa’s own carbon-budget strategy of decreasing greenhouse gas emissions by 34 per cent by 2020 would be impaired and impossible.”

“The climate crisis is in fact a reality and should be taken seriously – now more than ever,” said Desmond D’Sa from SDCEA.

Presentations will be made by key speakers who will present. All community members, the public and organisations are encouraged to join in taking action.

RSVP by no later than Friday 2 March. Contact Shanice Firmin on shanice@sdceango.co.za or 031 461 1991.
